Shall we exchange things with each other?
An increasing number of businesses are aligning themselves with the circular economy. Exchanging, borrowing or repairing things which would otherwise be thrown away – is this the start of a new trend, moving us away from our throwaway culture?
In Barcelona, residents are able to learn how to repair their own things, thereby prolonging the service life of items such as, for example, bikes and computers. In Staffanstorp, one company is devoted to repairing damaged mobile telephones, computers and other devices being processed by insurance companies – objects which would otherwise have been thrown away or, at best, sent for recycling.
This is one example of a worldwide trend where broken products are being given a new lease of life. But is this just a fad, of only marginal importance, or does it mark a genuine turning point which could reduce the wasting of the world’s resources?
